Making the world better has never been more important. While many generations before this one have fought in wars for things like freedom, liberty, political control, and wealth, never has history required such a massive change as the current era. Although, at times this might seem like a daunting task, it does not have to be. In fact, there are many things that you can do in your community that will help to accomplish this monumental feat. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
First of all, you can give. This does not necessarily mean in an organized fashion to a large international charity. Some people don’t have extra money lying around, while others simply don’t want to make the sacrifice.
The good news is that you don’t need to have a lot to give a lot. Give to your local church or your school. Donate a single can of food out of that bulk case to a shelter or collection box.
If money is tight, give your time to a child looking for a role model. Sometimes that alone can go a long way towards making the world better.
Finally, forgive. While giving implies that you need to have abundance in order to do it, forgiving actually implies the opposite. When you have nothing to give, forgive those who may have hurt you or even those who may have taken away what you had.
Making the world better is not just about putting more positive into it; it’s also about taking the negative out of it. Forgiveness is one way to do that. Harboring hatred and pain only perpetuates the cycle, much like abuse. The more you are willing to forgive, the more happiness you will find. The more happiness you find, the more you will spread to others.
